ADAMS, NY, Jan. 30, 2010 -- Notre Dame High School student Rebecca DePerno, representing Utica Post 229 and Oneida County, “made a respectable presentation” in the 5th District Oratorical Contest and finished as a runner-up, reports Oneida County Commander John Ryan.

The competition took place Jan. 30 at South Jefferson High School in Adams, NY.

“She was one of four contestants representing the various counties and local posts in the 5th District,” Ryan said. “Her competitors were strong and experienced. Even though she was a runner-up, she found the experience to be rewarding and plans to enter the contest next year.”

The two contestants who were selected to represent the district in the Zone 4 contest at Mohawk High School on Saturday, Feb 6, were:

  • Thomas Roman, Post 61, Watertown, Jefferson County;
  • Zachary Rufa, Post 904, Alexandria Bay, Jefferson County. In 2009, Zachary represented the Department of NY at Boys' Nation.

Andrew Wright, Post 1642, Syracuse, Onondaga County, was also a runner-up. He is a sophomore, Rebecca is a junior, and Thomas and Zachary are both seniors in high school.
