Valentine's Party for 'Adopted' Nursing Home Vets

UTICA, Feb. 15, 2010 -- Several members of Post 229 and its Auxiliary held a pre-Valentine’s Day party for nursing-home-bound veterans on Feb. 11.

“They had us in stitches,” said Post Commander Tony Palladino. “They were funny, and one gent just wouldn’t stop telling jokes.”

Organized by Service Officer Dave Wilson, a contingent from Post 229 brought Valentine’s gift bags to the 25 veterans residing at the Pines at Utica Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. The appropriately red-colored gift bags were stocked with socks and an assortment of cookies, crackers and candies, Wilson reported.

Joining Wilson and Palladino at the party were: Frank Cassella, Vincent Zaleski, and Evelyn Mc Voy.

Post 229 decided to “adopt” the Pines after learning of the veterans living there, and brought Christmas gifts, a bit of fellowship and conversation to the facility in December.
