Ball Team Takes District, County Titles

by GREG GAETA, manager

It would take three wins in one day, but the Utica Post baseball team did it, clinching the District V championship (against Whitestown Post). The team also won the Oneida County title against Whitestown (played after the district playoffs).

Utica Post entered the 2010 district games as the league leader, with 17 wins and 1 loss, and immediately advanced with a 13-3 win over Little Falls Post.

The second game against Ilion Post was a heartbreaker, losing 6-5, despite battling back the entire game. After rain delays, Utica triumphed over New Hartford Post, 12-7, on July 24, and then was leading Ilion Post, 6-0, by the top of the 2nd inning before rain forced postponing play.

Sunday, the 25th, began with completing the trouncing of Ilion. Utica added 3 more runs in the top of the 2nd and never looked back, defeating Ilion 11-0 in 6 innings. Mike King went the distance on the mound. After a two-hour break, Whitestown was up next. This time it was Ryan Donovan’s turn to take the mound. Donovan threw a complete game, allowing only 1 earned run, scattering 8 hits and striking out 6. Mike Bunal had 3 hits for Whitestown. Mike King, Ryan Donovan, Vin Gaetano, Gary McConnell, and Just Hall each had 2 hits for Utica. Gaetano added another home run. Utica triumphed, 8-4.

After a 25-minute break, Utica was at it again against Whitestown for the District V Championship. Ryan Alesandro took the mound and started a bit shaky, walking the first batter and surrendering a home run to Mike Bunal. Alesandro only allowed 2 hits for the rest of the game. Utica got 2 hits from Mike King, Mike Scotellaro and Mike Obernesser. Utica clinched the title with a 13-2 five-inning victory shortened by the 10-run mercy rule.

Utica Post headed to the New York State Championship Tournament July 28, but was eliminated after two games. Utica became county champions Aug. 1 after holding back Whitestown, 4-3.
